Affiliate Marketing Compensation

May 17th, 2007

How You Get Paid by Affiliate Programs

During the massive surge in online commerce over the last ten years, a new business model has come very much to the fore. That model is affiliate marketing. The growth in just this one aspect of internet commerce has been simply astounding.

No less than $6 billion was earned by affiliates during the year of 2006, much of it by people who started out in a small way promoting simple products through networks from their home computers. Affiliate marketing has enjoyed this phenomenal growth due to the advantages it gives both the merchant and the promoter.

To the merchant, some of whom are among the biggest names in commerce, the affiliate marketing model allows them to sell their products without employing a sales team, or paying for advertising space. This makes it relatively risk free for them, as the affiliate commission, unlike advertising or wages, is only paid out of the price of sales. Make no sales and you pay no money. For the promoter, they have the option to promote an incredibly wide range of products and services, without the need to create a single product of their own.

With affiliate marketing, the promoter is paid a commission on every sale that they refer to the merchant’s website. These commissions vary enormously, with the commissions on digitally downloadable products being by far the greatest. Due to the fact that there is no cost involved in producing multiple copies of the product, vendors are prepared to offer as much as 75% commission to the referrer on purely digital products such as downloadable ebooks. Commissions on physical products must obviously be set that much lower, as there is a lot more expense involved in the production of the product.

These commissions that are paid to webmasters and promoters by affiliate networks can be paid in many different ways. PayPal, the online payment processor owned by online auction site eBay, is the most versatile form of payment, but some networks still insist on the old fashioned check.

This is especially annoying to affiliates from outside the USA, who often lose a sizeable portion of their money having to convert the currency. Some of the larger merchant networks will now pay directly into your bank account. One thing that always need to be borne in mind is that the affiliate network cannot pay the affiliate until any possible refund period has expired. This accounts for the sometimes long delay between the sale of the product, and the compensation of the promoter.

Some affiliate programs actually pay on two levels. This means that an affiliate who recruits another affiliate, gets paid a small commission on the sales of that second affiliate. These two-tier affiliate programs are designed to reward and encourage promoters who can bring other promoters into the organization, and as a result bring more sales to the business. These two-tier programs can be very rewarding, especially for someone who joins the system early.

Affiliate Marketing Problems

May 14th, 2007

Some Problems Facing Affiliate Marketers Today!

With the dramatic growth of internet business in the previous five years, has come the burgeoning rise of the business model of affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing, any potential internet business person can get an easy start without having to lay out much, or even any, money, and a potential merchant can drive visitors to their sales page without the need to employ staff or pay for advertising. Because of this, it is easy for anyone to sign up as an affiliate, and to begin to promote products or services.

Due to the ease with which people can sign up, and the extreme desire within so many people to leave their jobs and earn a living from the comfort of their own home, competition for sales within affiliate marketing is huge.

When you are an affiliate marketer promoting a big name brand, possibly through an affiliate network, you are in competition with literally thousands of people promoting the same product or service. If you are promoting digital products, then long before the standard affiliate even gets to see the promotion, it will have been sent out to the email lists of the big names in internet marketing, meaning that so often when a new marketer tries to sell a big name new release, they are usually pushing it to prospects who have already seen it several times before.

One of the other problems that affiliate marketing is facing is the sometimes poor rates at which affiliates are getting paid. Whilst the major affiliate networks have built up a solid reputation for paying the correct amount of money on time, if you are an affiliate for an individual company, you have to take it very much on trust that you will actually be paid.

As the affiliate rarely has access to tracking systems that allow them to know how many sales have originated from their efforts, they have no way of knowing if they will be paid what is due.

Another huge problem with affiliate marketing is the deletion of cookies by popular spyware programs. One program in particular will remove the tracking cookies that remain on a potential buyers’ computer, allowing the affiliate to be credited with the sale even if it occurs later. This is cutting down the number of commissions that would normally be paid to affiliates, because of the inability to identify who referred the sale.

Also a serious threat to affiliate marketing is the ability of some software to redirect commissions to the developers of the software which were rightfully due to affiliates. These are such serious threats that even the major affiliate networks are becoming increasingly worried.

Different forms of tracking systems are needed if these sinister threats are to be overcome. With so much riding on the future of affiliate marketing, you can be sure that no stone will be left unturned.

Affiliate Marketing – What is Affiliate Marketing?

May 10th, 2007

What Exactly is Affiliate Marketing

With the ever expanding and burgeoning interest in the Internet, and more and more people doing business online, new business models have emerged, to the great benefit of producers, consumers, and merchants.

Of the most popular, and successful, of these models is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is simply the art of promoting other people’s products or services, in return for a commission, or percentage of the sales price. Now it is possible for anyone with a computer, and connection to the Internet, to effectively start their own business with no extra expense, and no need to design or create their own product.

Every kind of product or service you can think of is sold somewhere on the internet through affiliate marketing. Many companies selling both physical products and digital downloads run their own affiliate program, where they are personally responsible for recruiting, training, and ultimately paying, their affiliates. Also, many other companies sell in this manner through the use of affiliate networks, where a third party handles all of the administration, in return for taking its own percentage out of the profits.

Affiliate programs are typically free to join for the affiliate. Many of these programs will need to do a check on the potential affiliate’s website before they will accept the application, and these networks often include programs by household name retailers. but there are some networks that will not even do that. For some networks, you do not even need to have a website. If you are starting out in affiliate marketing, there are some very large networks where you can just sign up for free with no check.

The massive US digital product distributor Clickbank is one of the most popular networks for new marketer to begin with. This is because they offer a guaranteed free sign up, and have over ten thousand different digital products which you can promote. Because the products are digital, the vendors are prepared to pay as much as 75% in commission to the affiliate.

The new marketer is given an identification by the network, which they then use in all of their promotions. You can promote multiple products at any one time, and once you have surpassed the minimum amount, you are paid in the form of a monthly check for all of the commissions you have earned.

As Clickbank only handles digital products, many affiliate marketers will expand by joining other networks such as RoiRocket, Commission Junction and Linkshare, which operate a similar system, but sell physical products as well, often from very well known, well established businesses.

With these networks you will have to prove yourself by having your website checked for suitability, but again there is no joining charge. These networks will pay their affiliates with direct deposit to their bank account. Affiliate marketing keeps on growing as the internet continues to expand, and the opportunities to get involved get greater all the time.

How to Get Started in Affiliate Marketing

May 6th, 2007

How to Get Started in Affiliate Marketing

During the last ten years online retailing has undergone the most phenomenal growth. The e-commerce website, once ridiculed as a medium for attracting customers and revenue, has now become ubiquitous among even the biggest names in retail and commerce.

New business models have come on to the scene, none more successfully than affiliate marketing, Now, not only do merchants have a way of creating sales without any expense on advertising, or need to employ staff, but many people have found an easy way to break in to the world of internet commerce without any investment, or the need to create a product.

For the aspiring internet businessperson, affiliate marketing represents one of the easiest ways to get a start in business. You do not need to create any product to sell, or provide any service. Instead, you can choose from a virtually unlimited range of products or services, which run affiliate programs either from their own website, or through affiliate networks.

Because the range of choices is so great the first step that needs to be taken by anyone wanting to become a professional marketer, is to decide on the type of product or service that they wish to promote. Of course many ’super affiliates’ promote a whole range of products, often bearing little or no resemblance to each other, but is inadvisable to start that way.

The most popular way for aspiring affiliate marketers to start is by joining one of the affiliate networks, that allow you to choose between a vast range of products to sell. The easiest way to start is by joining a network that sells digital downloadable products, such as Clickbank or PayDotCom.com. Here you will be given an affiliate identification that you will use on every promotion that you undertake.

You can promote as many products as you like, and you will not even need a website, either to be approved, or to begin selling the products. Go through the catalog of products, and select something that is of interest to you. With these digital networks the commission rates can be as high as 75%, so there are plenty of products to choose from with potential.

Click here to get started with our favourite and top recommended affiliate network now!

Once you have selected a product, you will need to decide how much money you want to invest in trying to promote it. Initially at least, you would be ill advised to think about Pay Per Click advertising, because the potential expenses involved here can be quite horrendous. You do not need to spend any money to begin promoting products.

If you wish, you can begin by starting a free weblog at Blogger, the blogging service now owned by Google. Simply write a brief review of the product, and include a link to the merchant’s sales page. You can then write articles and submit them to leading article directories, with the resource box link pointing to your weblog.

There is no risk involved here. If you start to make sales, then you can consider reinvesting in paid advertising. Either way, it has never been easier to get a start in internet commerce.

The Future of Affiliate Marketing

May 3rd, 2007

The Future of Affiliate Marketing
During the last ten years, internet commerce has expanded to an absolutely phenomenal degree. In the beginning it was even doubted whether the model of the e-commerce website was a viable long term proposition for selling goods and services. Now, every major company in commerce has its own website, and most of these use some form of e-commerce solution to bring their wares to a public that has taken to online shopping in a huge way.

The affiliate marketing model has enjoyed an especially meteoric rise to prominence, largely due to the mutual advantage it confers on both the promoter and the merchant.

Affiliate marketing is now huge, so huge in fact that over $6 billion of revenue was generated by affiliates during the last year. Not only have so many companies joined in by offering their own dedicated affiliate program, many more have joined the major networks of programs, which allow affiliates to promote many different products at the same time, and get paid for their work in one easy to manage consolidated payment.

Affiliate networks have allowed many fledgling business people the start they needed in online commerce, and many individual affiliates have gone on to earn six figure incomes from very modest beginnings.

Due to the ease with which it is possible to become an affiliate, there is huge competition among these people for the spendable dollar. Most affiliates will end up promoting products which have already been pushed to the marketplace by the big hitters, the marketers with extremely large email lists, who can promote these offers at no expense to thousands of people at once. This is the main reason why affiliate marketing is not the panacea that many who enter it hope it will be.

So many people who enter this business with high hopes become discouraged, and can see no way to try to improve upon their depressing results.

One different type of affiliate marketing, that many people believe will be the wave of the future, is the Cost Per Action, or CPA network. Here, the promoter is not just paid when the merchant makes a sale, but when the consumer performs whatever action is deemed as payable by the merchant. Merchants will often pay just for a simple online form to be filled in, even if no subsequent sale takes place.

Sometimes they will even pay just for the potential consumer to click through from the promoter’s website to theirs. The process of paying for advertising, and then directing visitors to click through to the merchant’s site, is known as ‘click flipping’.

The one disadvantage of these Cost Per Action sites is that they are relatively difficult to get approval with. You will need to have a website that meets with certain conditions, and often those conditions are very stringent. However, there are many people who believe that the Cost Per Action network will become the most important part of the future of internet commerce.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Affect Traditional Advertising?

May 2nd, 2007

How Does Affiliate Marketing Affect Traditional Advertising?

When online commerce was very much in its infancy, many commentators seriously doubted its ability to ever become a viable, sustainable business model. Now, ten years later, we can see from the burgeoning growth it has enjoyed, that online commerce will be a massive factor in not only the near future, but also as far into the future as one can see.

Not only has standard commerce become established, with virtually every big business in the world now enjoying an online presence, but new models of business have evolved from this amazing growth. One of the most successful of all of these models is affiliate marketing.

Because of the fact that merchants have no need to employ staff to do selling for them, and no need to do any paid advertising in order to find customers, affiliate marketing is very popular with them. The big difference is that when you employ staff, the staff must be paid, whether or not you sell any products or services.

Advertising must be paid for, irrespective of its efficacy. With promotion by affiliate, you only ever pay when sales are made. The only downside of this, of course, is that commissions must be paid, which are often sizeable, especially when the products are digital downloads.

Traditional advertising expenses can be absolutely enormous. For a large company, mass advertising in popular media such as the national press and on television may be sustainable, but it will certainly eat very much into the potential profits, and in the case of these media, especially television, campaigns often have to be designed and paid for in advance.

If a product just does not sell, or a campaign is proving to be totally ineffective, there is no way to avoid the embarrassing and painful losses that will ensue. It is easy to see why an affiliate marketing model is so appealing in this case. Yes, you still have the expenses of product development, and the expense of customer service, but with the affiliate marketing model, risk is cut to the minimum because it costs nothing to recruit the affiliate, and you pay nothing to the affiliate unless sales are made.

Given that, you might have expected that traditional advertising would be greatly suffering from the emergence of the affiliate marketing model. In practice, most of the major companies are still paying as much as ever for traditional forms of advertising. If they stop, and just rely on affiliates, sales drop.

There is still a need for each company to get its brand well known, and get its name out in front of the buying public. Internet affiliate marketing is mainly seen as an addition to, not a replacement for, traditional advertising. The future for traditional advertising remains as rosy as ever.

A Short History of Affiliate Programs

May 1st, 2007

Affiliate Marketing – History of Affiliate Marketing

As the internet continues to grow at searing speed, so do the opportunities to get involved in online commerce. Affiliate marketing has become one of the most popular business models, for everyone from the new marketer coming to internet commerce for the first time, to multi national companies and household names of retail. This is largely due to the win win nature of affiliate deals.

The merchants have no advertising expenses, or staff to pay, in order to sell their products, while the affiliates can set up in business for no other expenses than a computer and internet connection.

It is widely believed that the massive online retailer Amazon was the first company to use affiliate marketing on the internet. That is not strictly true. The honor really belongs to a music retailer called CDNow. Their affiliate program, known as ‘buyweb’, was started as far back as the fall of 1994.

They first invented the concept of having potential buyers click through to their site from other site, on which other people would put reviews of the music. These independent websites would then be paid a commission. It was through association with Geffen Records that this system was started. Geffen wanted to sell their own artists’ CDs but did not want to do their own order fulfilment.

Amazon’s affiliate program was, however, one of the first to be seen, and remains one of the most popular to this day. Legend has it that it all started at a party, when the founder of Amazon was talking to an author who wanted to sell books from an independent website.

The Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, came up with the idea of having the independent site linked to theirs, so that the referrer should earn a commission. The system became known as the Amazon Associate Program, the name by which it is still known today. Amazon’s program remains extremely popular, although it has acquired many imitators in the intervening years.

From these beginnings affiliate marketing has continued to grow at a phenomenal pace. It has been estimated that in 2006 the total earnings of world affiliates was over $6 billion. This is a near doubling of the figures for the previous year. The revenues have come from all different sectors of commerce.

Originally, the e-commerce website was not taken seriously as a viable commercial store front. Now, things could not be more different. Virtually every large business not only has its own website, but they sell every kind of good through it. A very large number of these businesses take advantage of the affiliate model, often through the affiliate networks.

Affiliate marketing has also grown hugely amongst sellers of digital products. Networks that allow potential affiliates to sign up for free, and promote a whole range of digitally downloadable ebooks and audio files, have allowed people to set up their own businesses with very little expense, and be paid a commission on every product that they sell. Getting in to the exciting world of affiliate marketing has never been easier.

Various Types of Affiliate Marketing

April 30th, 2007

Affiliate Marketing Options

In the last ten or so years, online commerce has expanded by an amazing degree. Virtually every business now has an online presence, and many have started to use affiliate marketing as an easy way to promote sales of their products.

In exchange for paying a commission on sales, the company knows that it will not have to do paid advertising, or to employ sales personnel, in order to make the sales it will make with affiliate marketing. The affiliate can get in to business, and promote an almost inexhaustible range of products, without needing any up front capital expenditure.

Many a fledgling online businessperson decides to start by following the model of affiliate marketing. These newcomers often find that it is easiest to start with the marketing of digitally downloadable products, often through one of the major networks. These networks allow anyone to sign up with no quality check being done on their website.

Indeed, there is no requirement to even have a website. On signing up, the affiliate is given an identification, that they will use in every different campaign. All sales made through that network, no matter how many different products are involved, will be consolidated into one monthly check. This type of marketing is so popular because of the ease with which someone can get started, and the lack of capital expenditure or risk involved.

Another type of affiliate marketing that is very popular is the selling of physical products through networks. This is not quite so easy to break into, as the network will want to check on the potential promoter’s website before they grant approval. Once approval has been granted, however, there is an almost limitless range of products that can be promoted, again with no capital expense necessary.

Even here, a free weblog will often be all you need to gain approval, and be allowed to start selling a whole range of products. This type of affiliate marketing has the advantage of having extremely well known, and well trusted, brands among its possible promotions.

These major networks will often pay directly to the affiliate’s bank account, again in one consolidated monthly payment. Of course many companies simply choose to run their own affiliate program in their own way, without the use of any network. These programs make it harder for the affiliates to track their commissions, if they are promoting more than one program at the same time.

One of the newer types of affiliate program is the Cost Per Action network. Here, companies will pay the promoter for actions the consumer takes while visiting the promoter’s website. This action need not involve any purchase, it may be as simple as filling in an online web form requesting more information.

It could even be a simple click through from the promoter’s website to the merchant. Many experienced people believe these Cost Per Action networks will play a very significant part in the future of online commerce.

Common Misconceptions About Affiliate Marketing

April 29th, 2007

Affiliate Marketing – Common Misconceptions About Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing has enjoyed a burgeoning growth in recent years. From humble beginnings where the e-commerce website was not taken seriously as a potentially lucrative way to sell products, More and more businesses have not only taken to e-commerce in a big way, but also put ever more time and effort into their affiliate schemes, realising that they often involve a win win situation for everybody.

Every day new potential consumers come on to the internet, and new potential affiliates look to this business model as a way of starting a business with very little outlay. At their lack of effectiveness is one myth about affiliate marketing that has definitely been dispelled.

One of the most common, and long enduring, of misconceptions concerning affiliate marketing is that it was Amazon, the giant online retailer, that was responsible for creating the world’s first online affiliate program.

Although Amazon’s affiliate system, known as the Amazon Associate Program, was indeed among the earliest to be created, the actual honor of being the very first belongs to the music retailer CDNow. Due to Geffen Records wanting to sell its own artists’ records, but not to do the actual order fulfilment, the concept was born of linking a merchant website to one promoting the merchant’s goods.

Another common misconception concerning affiliate marketing is that it is somehow related to multi level marketing, or MLM. Especially, that it involves the paying of a fee to be allowed to promote the merchant’s products. With multi level marketing, there is nearly always a joining fee to be paid, and often a monthly fee to stay in the program. This is often only waived if the person promoting the program buys a certain amount of product from the merchant they are representing. In true affiliate marketing, no fees of this kind are payable.

Although many, if not most, affiliate programs demand that the website of the potential affiliate is thoroughly checked for suitability, none of them charge fees for this checking to take place. Some affiliate networks can even be joined without any checks taking place, with the joining affiliate then able to promote multiple products from the network’s range.

A further misconception is simply that affiliate marketing is ’small beer’ and therefore not worthwhile. In 2006 over $6 billion was earned in affiliate revenue, much of it by lone sole trader affiliates who started with virtually no investment.

Free online courses are even available which show the reader how to market affiliate products at no expense, beyond that of a computer and internet connection. This is done by writing articles for the popular article sites, with links in the resource box at the bottom of the article pointing to your web page where you try to sell the affiliate product.

Free weblogs, and free pages on social networking sites are also used to drive traffic to the merchant’s sales page. It has never been easier or cheaper to start a business, by selling other peoples’ products on commission.

Get a Website Sooner Rather than Later

April 26th, 2007

If Your Marketing Affiliate Program then You Need You Own Website

If you’ve been looking around this website then you already know what affiliate programs are and as I have said on other posts, every affiliate program you join will supply you with a turnkey site or sales page to promote their product or service.

You need to decide whether you are going to use this website to make sales or whether to set up your own site.

I would say that you absolutely MUST get your own domain name and hosting , even if you are only going to sell affiliate products.

If you build your own website then it will be yours forever whether your chosen affiliate program continues or not. This is the main reason why you need your own site. What happens if after months or even years of promoting an affiliate page the business decides that it’s going to pull the plug. Well, I’ll tell you what happens, your years of hard works goes down the drain too.

BUT….if you promote the affiliate products or services from your own site then IF a certain company goes to the wall, you simply remove it’s links from YOUR site and switch them to one of your other affiliate products.

In recent times lots of investment jobs are available for people. Most of these jobs are available in the marketing of loans. Especially when it comes to mortgage loans, good commissions are offered on each new loan approval. Other jobs are available in the field of credit card debt recovery. Normally highest commissions are paid on the recovery of loans from merchant credit services providers. It is because the ratio of bankruptcy in such cases is very high. High rate of sales tax on such companies has been found the biggest reason of failure.
